System Protection of Windows may take up to 10% or more of disk space to save System Restore points and Previious Versions. Other than change the limit of System Protection disk usage allocation to reduce allocation amount and free up the space, you can also immediately delete and reclaim almost all space used by System Restore and Shadow Copies (including Previous Versions) by using Disk Cleanup Manager to eliminate all but the most recent System Restore point.
Reason :– System restore is by default turned on.System restore settings are mostly altered by a virus or malware which changes the registry or group policy settings on your computer causing system restore disabled and the restore point creation option grayed out.
Solution:- if the system restore is disabled on your computer you have two option to enable it so that you could create a restore point or configure it or restore the computer.
Second Method to enable system restore using registry
To release the reclaim space used by System Restore and Shadow Copies, simply follow the steps:
- Click Start button.
- Type disk cleanup in the Start Search box.
- Click Disk Cleanup from the search results list.
- Select Files from All Users on this computer option, or tap or click on Clean up system files.
- If prompted, click or tap OK on Disk Space Cleanup Manager for Windows User Access Control permission request dialog.
- If you have more than one drives, choose a drive letter from the drop down list which you want to delete the System Restore points, and press OK.
- Disk Cleanup will perform calculation to determine how much space it can free. Once done, click on More Options tab.
- Under the section of System Restore and Shadow Copies, click on Clean up… button.
- Click on Delete button when asked whether are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point.
- Disk Cleanup will erase all old restore points or files and the space will be reclaimed for everybody use. You can check the reduced space used by restore points and shadow copies with vssadmin List ShadowStorage command.
Note that when you delete System Restore old restore points to reclaim or free up some space, the availability of the old except the last Previous Versions files will also be erased and no longer accessible. Beside, this trick also does not change the limit on how much space Volume Shadow Copies and System Restore can use.

Disable System Restore
The System Restore feature has been a part of Windows for decades. In Windows 10 it's still useful for recovering quickly when a new app or device driver causes instability.
System Restore works by creating snapshots called restore points, which keep backup copies of your system configuration, including registry settings, driver files, and third-party programs. It works best when you restore your system configuration immediately (or at least very soon) after making a change to system settings.
Primarily as a disk-space-saving measure, Windows 10 disables the System Protection feature and deletes existing restore points as part of setup. If you want to use this feature, you must first turn it back on. Here's how.
First, in the search box, type systempropertiesprotection and press Enter. That opens the System Properties dialog box, with the System Protection tab visible.
In the list of drives available for protection, find the system drive (C:) and check its status. If this setting is Off, the System Restore button and the Create button are both grayed out and unavailable.
Sonic forces pc mediaife. Click Configure and then click the Turn on system protection option. From this dialog box, you can also adjust settings for disk space usage and delete any existing restore points. Click Apply and then OK to close the dialog box.
Windows saves some restore points automatically (with each cumulative update installed through Windows Update, for example), but it's never a bad idea to take a system configuration snapshot manually before installing a new app or a downloaded driver or low-level system utility.
On the System Protection tab, click Create to manually create a restore point. Be sure to give it a descriptive name (such as 'Before installing new printer driver').
If you detect problems after making a system change, first uninstall the app or driver using Settings > Apps > Apps & Features. Then run System Restore (Rstrui.exe) to restore the previous system configuration.

reg delete HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTSystemRestore /v DisableSR /f
Hi
Since installing Windows 10 I've had a problem with System Restore. I've searched the web (including this forum) but so far have not found anyone with my particular problem. I'm not saying they're not there, just that I've not found them yet.
As you can see from the attached graphic, I can access the System Restore panel but System Restore for the Windows drive is turned off (orange box) and the means of restoring to an earlier restore point as well as Create are greyed out. The ONLY thing the window allows me to do is to go to the Configure panel. When I get there I find that System Protection is disabled and I cannot turn it on. However, my system IS using some space (blue box) although I have a sneaky suspicion that has not changed since I installed W10.
My question therefore is really: how do I enable System Restore? I am sincerely hoping that someone has a possible solution to this and any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Tracey
PS After writing the above I did a search in the registry for System Restore but there were only about six or seven references. I also had a quick look at Services and noticed that VSS was stopped. Following a search which revealed that System Restore might depend on it I started it. I then signed out and then back in again but I still can't get System Restore enabled.
Sometimes when you try to create a System Restore point or want to configure System Restore feature in Windows, you may fall into any of the below mentioned situation:
System Restore tab may be missing in My Computer Properties or Create and Configure buttons are grayed out and you see following messages if you try to open system restore (rstrui.exe) from any other ways around.
“System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore, contact your domain Administrator.”
-or-
“System Restore Properties page says disabled by Group Policy”
-or-
“System Restore is disabled by your system administrator”.
-or-
“System Restore Properties page says disabled by Group Policy”
-or-
“System Restore is disabled by your system administrator”.
If the system restore is disabled by group policy on your computer you would find system restore button grayed out when you open system protection under system properties.
